What Is The Difference Between a Mini Tummy Tuck & Non-Surgical Liposuction?

There are many options when it comes to body contouring treatments. Here at Cape & Islands Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Michael Loffredo and Dr. Seth Jones, pride themselves on providing a wide variety of options so that they can tailor their treatments/procedures to the needs/goals of their patients. As body contouring experts, our surgeons provide both surgical treatments like tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) and both surgical and non-surgical liposuction treatments. Both of these treatments can help patients improve the appearance and shape of areas of the body, including the abdomen.  But these treatments work in very different ways. In fact, many patients benefit from combining these types of treatments as part of a full-body transformation. In this article, we will cover the differences between these treatments, how they work, and how they can be used separately or together depending on a patient’s goals. For patients, the best way to find out what treatments are most suited for their goals is through a consultation with an experienced, board-certified provider. For patients on Cape Cod, our teams in Plymouth, Hyannis, and Sandwich can help you achieve your body contouring goals. Contact our team for more information.

What is a "Mini" Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical treatment that removes both fat and skin from around the abdomen. The key difference between a mini tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck is the extent of the surgery. A mini tummy tuck is less invasive because it primarily targets the lower abdomen around the belly button. Both mini tummy tucks and full tummy tucks help remove skin and fat as well as tighten the abdominal muscles to help reshape the abdomen.

How Does Radiofrequency Assisted Liposuction Work?

Treatments like BodyTite and Quantum RF use radiofrequency technology to provide less invasive liposuction. The main difference between all liposuction treatments and abdominoplasties is that abdominoplasties impact the skin, fat, and muscle, while liposuction only impacts the fat. Liposuction treatments like BodyTite are not replacements for treatments like a mini tummy tuck, but are treatments that are recommended based on a patient’s goals. For a patient who primarily needs fat removal, our doctors may recommend traditional liposuction or radiofrequency-assisted liposuction.

How Are These Treatments Combined?

Oftentimes, when patients are looking for a full body transformation, our plastic surgeons will create tailored treatment plans that combine different treatments for more comprehensive results. For example, treatments like BodyTite and Quantum RF may be used in specific areas around the body, like the flanks, while a tummy tuck is used on the abdomen. By combining different treatments, patients can maximize their results.
