Frequently Asked Questions About Plastic Surgery

The term “Mommy Makeover” refers to a combination of multiple plastic surgery techniques used to help new mothers who are experiencing lasting changes to their bodies after a pregnancy. It is common for women’s bodies to undergo many changes during a pregnancy, but for many women it can be disheartening to see those changes become seemingly irreversible months & years after their pregnancy. By combining breast surgery procedures like a lift, augmentation, or reduction with liposuction or a tummy tuck, women can regain their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Both tummy tucks and liposuction can be used to treat the abdomen area of the body. However, liposuction can also be used in other areas of the body including the thighs and flanks. Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that involves the destruction and removal of fat cells in a targeted area of the body. By contrast, a tummy tuck procedure is more invasive and involves the surgical reconstruction of muscles and removal of excess skin.

Liposuction does permanently remove fat cells from the treated area, however it does not permanently stop the body from gaining weight in the future. Proper diet and exercise are highly recommended to prevent future weight gain after you have recovered from liposuction.

These procedures are often applied in different scenarios. The best way to be matched to the correct procedure is to schedule a consultation with a highly-rated, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Loffredo or Dr. Jones. Speaking generally, tummy tucks are often recommended for men and women who have excess loose skin. For instance a patient who has had major weight loss may need a tummy tuck to remove excess skin. By contrast, a liposuction is usually recommended for patients who have small pockets of fat that they would like removed.

Recovery from any plastic surgery can differ based on the procedure performed and varies from patient to patient. Most plastic surgeons will recommend that patients take at least two full weeks off from work for their recovery. Patients should discuss their aftercare and recovery plan with their plastic surgeon.
