Why Do Women Consider Having Breast Implants Removed or Replaced?

There are a variety of reasons a woman might consider breast implant removal surgery or breast implant replacement. Some women may be unhappy with how the breast implants look over time or may return to their natural breast size. Over time breast implants can change shape due to an implant shifting or otherwise getting displaced. Depending on the type of implant used, implants can sag or look mishappen after a decade. These changes can happen independently and therefore cause breast asymmetry. Other women may simply want a different size and shape implant than the initial implant they received. Another common surgery we perform is implant removal with a breast lift.

Breast implant replacement, also referred to as breast implant revision, is the process of removing old implants and replacing them with new ones. The goals of breast implant revision is to improve the shape and size of the breast, address issues with asymmetry, and update the implant material. Many women consider having breast implant replacement around 10 years after their initial surgery or as they start ton notice issues with how their breast implants look or feel. A good candidate for breast implant revision, is any healthy patient who has had breast implants in the past and is unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of their current implants or is interested in changing the size and shape of their breasts.

Breast Implant Removal After

While some patients are interested in restoring the way the breasts looked after they initially received their breast implants, or in potentially modifying the look, some patients simply want the implants to be removed, and are interested in returning to their natural breasts. Some women do this as they get older so that they no longer have to worry about any issues that might arise with their breast implants as they age, and other women simply want to return to the natural look their breasts had before they had their breast implant surgery. Regardless of the reason, our Board-Certified surgeons can help remove the breast implants, scar tissue, and help our patients achieve a natural look. Breast implant removal is frequently combined with a breast lift to reshape the breasts without impacting the size.

Breast Reduction with Mastopexy Before

Breast Reduction with Mastopexy After

A breast lift, also referred to as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that can change the shape of the breasts without impacting their size. Instead of using a silicone or saline-filled implant, the breast is surgically reshaped. This is often done in conjunction with other breast surgeries like implant removal or breast reduction. Breast lifts can help address issues with sagging, change the position of the nipples, and the size of the areolae. Breast lifts are often also recommended for women who want to address issues with asymmetrical breasts.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Implant Removal

When a breast implant is removed, the volume of the breast is reduced significantly. This can cause breasts to appear deflated and lead to sagging and wrinkling. For this reason, many patients opt to either have the implants replaced with new implants or receive a breast lift do handle issues with excess skin.

Generally speaking breast implants last from 10 to 15 years after the initial surgery. However, your plastic surgeon might not recommend revision or removal if you are not experiencing any issues with the look and feel of your breast implants. Usually patients seek out breast revision and removal surgery in relation to issues with their existing breast implants.

Aside from aesthetic and cosmetic changes to how a breast implant looks, there are concerns that breast implant could rupture.
