What are Kybella® Double Chin Fat Reduction Injections?
KYBELLA® uses deoxycholic acid to help decrease fat around the jawline. It is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.” Here at Cape and Islands Plastic Surgery we are happy to provide this injectable as well as other contouring treatments that can help patients address issues they might have with their jawline.
How does KYBELLA® work?
KYBELLA uses deoxycholic acid. This acid is a naturally forming acid that helps breakdown and absorb dietary fat. When this acid is injected underneath the chin it causes that fat cells to disintegrate. After the cells have been destroyed they cannot store fat.

After Weight Loss
Patients who have experienced weight loss through dieting, exercise, or by taking medications like Semaglutide injections (brand name Ozempic) will often have issues with loose skin around their jawline. This can be frustrating for patients who have put a serious amount of work and time into losing weight. Kybella is one of the treatments we recommend to patients who have issues with loose or sagging skin around their chin/neck. For more information about skin tightening treatments please see our full page on skin tightening after weight loss.
How Many KYBELLA Treatments Do Patients Need
Here at Cape & Islands Plastic Surgery we help patients customize their treatments based on their goals. Kybella is often recommended as a series over time.
- After Two Treatments: Patients will start to see their results after their second treatment.
- After Six Treatments: Patients are often recommended six treatment that are spaced out over the course of at least one full month.
How Long Do KYBELLA Results Last?
An important note about how KYBELLA works is that it destroys fat cells. Those cells stop existing which means they can never accumulate fat. KYBELLA results are designed to last a lifetime. That said the injection does not destroy every fat cell in the treatment area. The injectable removes a majority of the subcutaneous fat cells in the area. This means it is possible that if you gain weight in the future the remaining fat cells can store new fat which can cause your results to fade.
