How Do Different Laser Treatments Work?

Laser skin treatments help patients address a wide variety of skin concerns. From reducing wrinkles and fine lines to treating acne scars and pigmentation issues, these treatments can help rejuvenate the skin and enhance its overall appearance. There are many different types of technologies and categories of laser treatments. At their core, all laser treatments work by stimulating the body’s natural healing process. In this article, we will cover how different categories of laser treatments differ from one another. What Is The Difference Between Ablative & Non-Ablative Laser Treatments?

Ablative laser treatments work by removing the outer layers of damaged skin to promote the growth of fresh, healthy skin underneath. These types of treatments typically use powerful laser wavelengths to target and precisely vaporize the skin’s surface, addressing concerns like deep wrinkles, scars, and uneven texture. While highly effective, ablative treatments often require a longer recovery period as the skin heals and regenerates. CO2 lasers are a common type of ablative laser treatment.

Non-ablative laser treatments focus on heating the underlying layers of the skin without damaging the surface. Treatments like BBL Hero or Moxi are examples of non-ablative. These treatments stimulate collagen production by heating the deeper layers of the skin using light therapy. Non-ablative treatments are gentler compared to their ablative counterparts, making for a shorter downtime, but they typically require multiple sessions to achieve optimal results.

What Are Fractional Lasers & How Do They Work?

Fractional lasers are an advanced skin resurfacing technology that targets microscopic sections of the skin for precise and effective treatment. Unlike traditional lasers that treat the entire surface of the skin, fractional lasers create tiny columns of thermal damage, leaving surrounding tissue intact. Fractional laser technology can be found in both ablative and non-ablative forms. The key benefit of fractional lasers is that they provide less downtime compared to laser treatments that target the entire skin surface.

What Type Of Laser Treatment is Tetra CoolPeel?

Tetra CoolPeel is an example of a fractional CO2 laser. As a CO2 laser, it is an ablative treatment. But because it is a fractional treatment, it has significantly less downtime/recovery compared to other CO2 lasers. The advanced technology delivers laser energy in short pulses, which helps to control the heat and prevent thermal damage to the surrounding skin. This “cool” approach is why patients are able to see similar results with less downtime. Many patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two. For more information about the recovery process, we highly recommend reading an article one of our patients wrote highlighting her treatment and recovery process day-by-day.
