Recently Cape Cod Health News released a touching and informative story on local cancer advocate and Founder and Executive Director of Cape Wellness Collaborative, Sarah Swain.
Surgery isn’t on the minds of most women after receiving clean results from a mammogram, but with the review of her family history and recommended genetic testing it was determined that Sarah carried the PALB2 gene, a gene closely related to the BRCA2 gene. She was then faced with a very tough decision.
Sarah decided to take matters into her own hands and elected to have a double mastectomy and a salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes). Working alongside three other doctors during Sarah’s surgery, Dr. Loffredo began the reconstructive phase of her mastectomy which involved the insertions of Tissue Expanders. Over the course of the next few months Sarah will continue her care and recovery with Dr. Loffredo and the staff at Cape & Islands Plastic Surgery to complete her journey.
